Erecting a Timber Frame Pavilion

How Our Newberg Crane Service Helped Beautify a Home

Building with timber frames brings a unique challenge. But their practicality and aesthetics make up for it. When our towing team arrived at NE Kings Grade Road in Newberg, we knew this project was something special. The customer wanted a pavilion that would extend from the back of their home, creating a stunning outdoor space. The structure required timber frames—massive wooden beams—designed to provide wide-open spaces without the clutter of typical framing. So they called for our Newberg crane service to install the beams. And we had all the tools needed to get this job done smoothly.

The Unique Strength of Timber Frames

Unlike standard framing, timber frames allow for large spans—sometimes ten feet or more—between beams. This approach offers a wide, open feeling without the need for excessive studs or supports. One interesting aspect of this project was the use of traditional wood joinery. No steel bolts or plates went into the joints; instead, wooden pegs secured the beams together, showcasing the craftsmanship and simplicity of the design.

Planning and Setup

Before we could lift anything, we surveyed the site to ensure the ground was stable. Luckily, the weather held up, and the dirt beneath us was firm enough for the crane to operate. With everything ready, our operators on site, Tenny and John, rolled in with crane truck 209. Weight calculations were an important part of our planning. The heaviest beam for the pavilion weighed around 1,000 pounds, so exact maneuvering was key.

Rigging and Lifting with

Rigging was the next step. We used strong straps that wrapped around the beams twice before connecting to a bridle. Once secured, each post was carefully lifted and lowered into place. As the structure came together, the crew hammered wooden pins into each joint, locking the beams together without any metal fasteners. The process required careful coordination between the crane operator and the ground crew to ensure every piece fit perfectly.

How It All Came Together

Piece by piece, we worked through the pavilion’s frame. With each beam in place, the structure began to take shape, revealing the open, rustic design the homeowner envisioned. The whole operation took 7.5 hours from start to finish, requiring steady focus. The pavilion now stands as a beautiful, functional extension of the home, blending craftsmanship with natural surroundings. We’re proud our Newberg crane service made this great project come to life.
