Heavy Load? No Problem! Transporting Retired Electrical Boxes

Recycling on the Move

Transporting oversized, heavy equipment takes careful planning, the right trucks, and a towing team that knows what they’re doing. Recently, we took on a job involving Salem heavy equipment transport—hauling two massive electrical boxes from Salem to Far West Recycling in Tualatin. These electrical boxes were high-end outdoor units that had been in service for years but were now outdated. The company retiring them didn’t have the right equipment to move them to a scrap yard. That’s why they called us in. With each unit weighing several thousand pounds, we knew it would take the right approach to secure them properly for transport.

Setting Up the Haul

Since these boxes were so large, a flatbed was the best choice. We sent out one of our flatbed trucks along with two operators, Nick and Tenny, to handle the job. While the job itself was straightforward, we had to undertake a few extra steps to make sure we get it right:

  • Preparing the flatbed – The first challenge was removing the bed rails from the truck. The electrical boxes wouldn’t fit with the rails in place, and the forklift needed an open deck to load them.
  • Loading the boxes – The customer had a forklift on-site to lift each box onto the truck. Because these weren’t typical loads, we had to take extra care to position them securely.
  • Strapping everything down – With such a heavy and oddly shaped load, we used more tie-downs than a standard transport job. Proper weight distribution and securing each box tightly ensured a smooth, safe ride.

The Transport and Drop-Off

Once the load was secured, we hit the road toward Tualatin. The drive itself was uneventful, as we had already accounted for the weight and balance of the load. When we arrived at Far West Recycling, their team was ready with a forklift to unload the boxes. Within minutes, they had lifted them off the flatbed, completing the job in just 2.5 hours from start to finish.

A Change in Plans for the Remaining Units

The company originally had 40 more of these electrical boxes needing removal. We put together a quote to transport the rest and finish this Salem heavy equipment transport job, but before the plan moved forward, they received an unexpected offer. A charity organization that does mission work in the Philippines reached out, expressing interest in repurposing the units. Instead of heading to a scrap yard, these high-end boxes got a second life in a new location where they could continue to serve a purpose.
